Who is the best boss you had and why?

PJ Leone was my best boss because he made gave me the clear direction I needed when I was in a relatively new divisional CEO role; he then got out of the way while I did the job; he made it easy to ask him for advice and help without crowding and he supported me during one significant mistake — was even kind enough to refer to it merely as a management mis-step.

What are your top 3 tips for being a better leader?

Set very clear direction and set high expected standards.
Involve management teams deeply, then guide and support their subsequent plans.
Deal swiftly with substandard performance.

What conventional corporate wisdom no longer applies in today’s workplace?

The continuation of the “Annual Review” process — probably, it never did apply!

There will be less management-by-fear and better overall outcomes will result from genuine teamwork
